World Environment Day 2022

“Clean Environment … without smoking and vaping”

FairLife L.C.C. and the Municipality of Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni joined forces to send the message “Clean Environment … without smoking and vaping”, in the context of World Environment Day 2022, by organizing the Cleaning of the East Beach of Varkiza.

On Friday, the 3rd of June 2022, the beach of Varkiza was filled with the happy faces and laughs of 260 young volunteers – students of eight primary schools of the Municipality – along with numerous volunteers, citizens, and members of other associations, as part of the beach cleaning action.

The Mayor of Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni, Mr. Grigoris Konstantellos, commented: “Efforts like those made by FairLife L.C.C., to raise awareness about public health and speak openly about issues that we usually avoid, such as lung cancer, are very important and fully supported by the Municipality of Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni. The President of FairLife L.C.C., Korina Pateli-Bell, a good friend, and a driven woman, with important initiatives in the field of public health, has transformed her family’s hardship into courage and action. We support this woman and this purpose, we are here, embracing this and all similar efforts and saying “I inhale, I exhale but I do not breathe. The choice is yours. No to cigarettes, no to lung cancer.”

The President of FairLife L.C.C., Korina Pateli-Bell, thanked the Mayor and the Services of the Municipality for their support, and all the volunteers, as well as the Ambassadors of FairLife for sharing the vision of FairLife L.C.C. for “a future without smoking and vaping”. Ms Pateli-Bell stated: “The clean-up of the east beach of Varkiza completes the youth-led campaign of FairLife L.C.C., titled “The first generation without smoke, without vaping”, that aims to inform and sensitize young people about the consequences of smoking and vaping.”

The young volunteers were welcomed by the Ambassadors of FairLife L.C.C., Olympic Windsurfer Byron Kokkalanis and Greek Cycling Champion Zisis Soulios.

Byron Kokkalanis commented: “In collaboration with the schools of the Municipality of Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni, we have come to clean the beach because, other than clean lungs, we also want clean seas for a freer life!”

Zisis Soulios stated: “Just like we protect our lungs, we also need to protect our beaches. Clean seas, clean lungs!”

The action was supported by major sponsor Pfizer Hellas, and sponsors Amgen Hellas, Takeda, Metropolitan Hospital, and Kiriacoulis Mediterranean.

The action was also supported by CHITOS SA that offered natural mineral water ZAGORI to our volunteers and the company Frezyderm that provided sunscreen.

The Hellenic Airforce Base at Kavouri provided an ambulance, while the Health Center of Vari provided a doctor and a nurse.

The event was held under the auspices of the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA).
