As FairLife LCC – the first non-profit organization in Greece, exclusively dedicated to lung cancer – celebrates one year of operation, we recall its main actions within the past months, always with an eye to the future.

The pain of losing Simon Bell to lung cancer, at the age of 57, becomes the “seed” for creating FairLife. Korina Pateli-Bell, Simon’s wife and mother of two children, envisions a country with equal opportunities against the disease and dares to imagine a world protected from lung cancer.

FairLife Lung Cancer Care is founded, surrounded by friends, volunteers, lung cancer patients and relatives, representatives of the pharmaceutical industry and distinguished scientists.

FairLife works to support lung cancer patients and to raise public awareness of lung cancer causes, aiming to prevention and early diagnosis.

Collaboration with similar organizations, at both national and international levels (ELLOC, EOPE, LuCE, GLCC, ELF, IASLC, etc.), promotes FairLife’s objectives and strengthens its voice as well as the voice of lung cancer patients. In the context of cooperation and reciprocity, Korina Pateli-Bell is elected Treasurer, as a Member of the Lung Cancer Europe Board of Directors, in May 2021.

FairLife is aware that information is the first step in lung cancer treatment. The LEARN-ACT-HOPE section, a digital library, enriched with videos, interviews and talks, aims to become a reference point for anyone who wants to get information about lung cancer.

Coping with lung cancer is a constant struggle; it’s about reaching your “personal summit”. FairLife meets inspiring people and together they rally to a common cause. The world’s oldest windsurfer, Anastasia Gerolymatou, represents the power of will, proving that age is not a barrier. Distinguished mountaineers, such as Kiki Tsakaldimi, Nikos Magitsis and Satyabrata Dam, become brand ambassadors and convey the message of prevention to the ends of the earth, summiting the world’s highest peaks and supporting the FairLife 11157 lung cancer information and support line.

Young people hold the future in their hands and the power to make a difference to the world. FairLife relies on young generation and reaches teenagers in schools to educate them about the harmful effects of smoking. Orestis-Fotis Mikelakis, the youngest brand ambassador of the organization, shares his ideas and assists in implementing anti-smoking campaigns. Children address their peers, talk to them in their own language and portray tobacco products as lung cancer’s “best friends”.

Hoping that young people will become the “first tobacco/vape – free generation”, FairLife announces the “First Panhellenic Student & Youth Creative Writing and Poster Competition”, addressed to middle and high school students of the school year 2021-2022, approved by the Ministry of Education.

FairLife constantly aims to support lung cancer patients, by participating in scientific conferences and meetings, under the auspices of the organization.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and FairLife connects prevention to nature, physical exercise and health. Within this context, a new institution, “Asklepieia en drasi”, is inaugurated, aiming to link ancient healing temples with mental health and a healthy lifestyle.

FairLife encourages lung cancer screening, by promoting in Greece the campaign “GetChecked”, implemented by the European Institution for Lung Cancer, LuCE.

In collaboration with the Metropolitan Hospital, FairLife offers the screening program “Lung Health”, free of charge, to vulnerable social groups.

Palliative care is an extremely sensitive and important issue that concerns us all. Korina Pateli-Bell, President of FairLife, raises awareness about palliative care, through the ERT1 greek TV program “Keraia” with Rea Vitalis, where she describes the final months “in pain and fear” of her husband, Simon, who lost his life to lung cancer.

A new, fictional hero, LUCA, is born – inspired by the story of Simon Bell and created by the AstraZeneca team – to portray the challenges of lung cancer and the importance of prevention, in a deeply moving way.

On the anniversary of its foundation, FairLife holds a conference of European standards, open to the public, with the participation of distinguished speakers from Greece and abroad as well as representatives of the State, the scientific community, the pharmaceutical industry and patient organizations. Entitled “Lung Cancer – prevention and early diagnosis: Lung Cancer Screening Programme in Greece, are we ready?”, the conference discusses the inclusion of lung cancer screening in the national program for prevention “Spyros Doxiadis”, based on the results of the study, conducted by the Health Policy Institute.

12 months of operation have shown us that there is a will and a way to reverse the statistics and stop the course of the deadliest cancer. We promise to stay committed, to continue our efforts with vigor, with hope, through many more actions, ongoing information and a stronger presence alongside patients and their families.

However, none of this would have been possible without the warm and unceasing support of FairLife’s friends and sponsors. We need each and everyone to strike a decisive, coordinated blow against lung cancer.

Our warmest thanks.  We are forever grateful.
