Lung Cancer Awareness Month

FairLife Lung Cancer Care (FairLife L.C.C.) is the first and only non-profit organization, exclusively dedicated to lung cancer in Greece, founded in memory of Simon Bell, 57, who lost the battle with lung cancer in August 2020.

FairLife L.C.C.’s mission is to inform and raise awareness of lung cancer prevention and to  holistically support people impacted by lung cancer , aiming to improve their quality of life throughout their journey from diagnosis to treatment.

 

To support our mission:

  • We work to eliminate the LC stigma, experienced by people, impacted by the disease.
  • We promote LC prevention, early diagnosis and screening to decrease mortality rates.
  • We raise awareness of the value of comprehensive molecular screening.
  • We provide psychosocial support to patients, caregivers and family members.
  • We encourage and educate patients, institutions and the general public about the value of clinical trials and access to new innovative therapies.
  • We inform young people and citizens about the benefits of a stronger eco-consciousness, a better quality of life and a healthy environment. This includes sharing resources and advocating for policies that support clean air and sustainable practices in the wake of climate change.

 

A key feature of our activities is the substantiated, extensive scientific information, obtained through collaboration    with 25 national and international organizations and scientific relevant institutions,  more than 70 distinguished Greek and 12  international scientists .

Our goals are supported by a dynamic Board of Directors of 6 active members, 9 brand ambassadors and more than 100 volunteers.

FairLife meets inspiring people, of all ages, and together they rally to a common cause.

The world’s  oldest windsurfer, Anastasia Gerolymatou, the distinguished mountaineers Kiki Tsakaldimi, Nikos Magitsis,the high school student Orestis-Fotis Mikelakis, the Olympic champions, Ioannis Fountoulis and Byron Kokkalanis and Greek champion Zisis Soulios become FairLife’s brand ambassadors. Ιn 2023 we welcomed Antonis Tsapatakis, Paralympian and world champion swimmer.

FairLife L.C.C. milestone projects

  • The awarded digital informative library on lung cancer “Learn-Act-Hope”.
  • Lung Cancer Information and Support Line | FairLine 111 57. operating since June 2021(over 1,500 calls)
  • BREATH, a Program for Psychosocial Support, is offered nationwide, free of charge, to lung cancer patients, their family and caregivers, in collaboration with experienced and qualified mental health professionals.
  • Screening Program “Lung Health” is provided ,free of charge, through FairLife L.C.C., to individuals belonging to vulnerable social groups, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Hospital and the HHG Group and presented in IASCL 2020.
  • International campaign, entitled “Ask the right question” presented in Greece for the 1st time in Europe on lung cancer stigma associated with smoking.
  • Anti-smoking actions and information campaigns with the participation of 4.000 young people to raise awareness towards a tobacco/vape-free generation.
  • Highlighting the importance of physical exercise and wellness as a means of preventing diseases, including cancer, by bringing together 8 ambassadors from the world of sports, who share FairLife L.C.C.’s messages and vision.

November 2021

Organization of a scientific online conference, entitled “Lung Cancer- prevention and early diagnosis: Lung Cancer Screening programme in Greece, are we ready?”(November 2021)

The results of the study conducted by the Health Policy Institute, under the scientific supervision of Professor Kyriakos Souliotis and Dr. Evi Hatziandreou, Public Health Expert and Vice President of FairLife L.C.C., were presented at the conference. The study was conducted for the first time in Greece, in collaboration with FairLife.  Based on a predictive, stochastic model, screening leads to a significant reduction in lung cancer deaths by 24.61% and a reduction in years of life years lost by 30.9%. The above figures are in line with similar studies in other countries.

The new series of short informational broadcasts, entitled “14 Minutes of Life”, provide simple and clear answers to questions, raised by lung cancer patients and their caregivers.

FairLife L.C.C. is represented by Dr. Evi Hatziandreou, Vice- President of FairLife L.C.C., as part of the Greek parliament’s agenda in December 2022, to discuss the implementation of palliative care in Greece.

The necessity to holistically approach lung cancer patients is globally recognized. Issues, creating an additional strain on patients and a negative mindset, which affect the positive outcome of their treatment, should be urgently addressed.

2023

February 2023

Sends an awareness message, as part of the global campaign “Close the Care Gap” on the World Cancer Day 2023.A video, dedicated to World Cancer Day 2023, consists of awareness messages, featuring FairLife’s ambassadors and friends.  FairLife L.C.C. envisions a future, where cancer care is unaffected by social factors and joins forces to close the cancer care gap by confronting inequities, helping to reduce stigma and advocating for fair access to innovative treatments and holistic support to every patient, caregiver, family member, impacted by lung cancer.

March 2023

Hosts an informative webinar, on March 1st, 2023, dedicated to the significance of psychosocial support to Lung Cancer patients, their families and caregivers, which presents  BREATH, a pilot Program for Psychosocial Support, offered nationwide and free of charge to lung cancer patients, their families and caregivers, in collaboration with qualified mental health professionals. Participants discussed significant findings and results already available, regarding the program’s progress.

March 2023

Joins the 11th Athens Half Marathon, dedicated to the memory of the great Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis. FairLife L.C.C. runs the 5 km route, standing by Christos Apostolakos, a stage IV lung cancer patient, a symbol of determination and optimism.

April 2023

Joins the awareness-raising action of the Greek Patients’ Association, in April 2023, regarding patients’ rights, on the European Patients Rights Day 2023. FairLife L.C.C. participates through a fictional story about patients’ Right to Prevention, as part of the fundamental rights of citizens to healthcare.

April 2023

Launches the international awareness campaign Ask the right question about lung cancer, so as to highlight an important social issue – the stigma of lung cancer patients, related to the habit of smoking. The campaign was first launched in Canada and Australia, and is now being run in Europe, in Greece, by FairLife L.C.C. Preparation process ran between November 2022 and May 2023. Duration of the campaign will be 6 months. Real stories of patients and caregivers are featured on the website kanetisostierotisi.gr/en/(Greek and English version), designed to host the campaign. The website includes a report – on lung cancer facts and stigma, and a policy paper – addressed to all stakeholders to highlight the most pressing challenges in the fight against lung cancer in Greece, and solutions to the above related challenges. The research was conducted by the University of Piraeus.

June 2023

Hosts a hybrid webinar on lung cancer stigma, on June 13th, 2023, related to the smoking habit. The webinar follows the launch of the campaign Ask the Right Question, aiming to raise attention to the stigma and its socio-economic implications. It also focuses on the immediate and hidden impact on people living with lung cancer and on the prevalence and management of the disease.

Supports the edition of the new book, entitled “Breath of Life” by Christos Apostolakos, published by iWrite, on the occasion of World Cancer Survivors’ Day 2023.Christos Apostolakos is a lung cancer patient, a friend and supporter of FairLife L.C.C., who shares personal thoughts and feelings, as he journeys through the disease. The book offers the perspective of a patient and a sense of optimism to readers.

September 2023

Relaunches its logo, to reflect its commitment to contemporary social challenges and captures our vision to provide holistic support to the lung cancer community in Greece.

Produces a short awareness video on the occasion of World Environment Day 2023 and World Environmental Health Day 2023 to advocate lung health, within a healthy lifestyle and a green planet.

Participates in the 2nd Nevronas Festival – Festival of Inclusive Performing Arts and Artistic Interaction and joins initiatives for inclusion and equal access for all to art

Joins the 40th Authentic Marathon of Athens in the 5 km route, sending the message “Sport is health and the power of human spirit is unlimited.”

Organizes a stimulating walk in Tatoi, at the former Royal Houses, with the Just Pilates Studio team for a good cause, to send a strong message about mental and physical well-being and to support the BREATH Psychosocial Support Program.

Promotes an informative video within November, Lung Cancer Awareness Month activities.

Hosts the 3rd annual conference entitled “Lung cancer in the spotlight – everyday practice to optimal treatment” with the participation of 53 speakers-commentators and the attendance of 3,140 live and online viewers. The conference aimed to address both scientific and practical challenges of people impacted by  lung cancer. Information has been provided and awareness has been raised among the general public and representatives of the wider community and the State through engaging presentations delivered by medical scientists.

December 2023

Collaborates with ASTREA gallery in the group art exhibition “Rhapsody of Colors” to support the BREATH Psychosocial Support Program.

Participates in the 1st Open Agora at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre in a two-day event dedicated to Health, Mental Health and Disability.

International presence

Korina Pateli-Bell, President of FairLife, was elected Treasurer, as a member of the Board of Directors of Lung Cancer Europe (May 2021 – May 2023). She is also a member of the Patient Research advocate program STARS – IASLC.

She actively participates in numerous international meetings, aimed at preventing lung cancer and offering support to patients and caregivers.
